Introduction
Many people who follow God ask the same question at some point in their spiritual journey: How does God actually guide us? If the Holy Spirit is active in the lives of believers, how can we recognize His leading?
This week’s message, “The Leading of the Spirit – Part Two,” continued exploring how the Holy Spirit works in the lives of those who follow Jesus. Scripture teaches that the Spirit leads those who desire to be led—but learning to recognize His guidance requires attentiveness, humility, and trust.
Using the imagery Jesus shared in John 3, the message reminded us that the Spirit is like the wind. We cannot see the wind itself, but we can see its effects. In the same way, we may not physically see the Spirit of God, but we can recognize His influence, direction, and presence in our lives.
The question becomes not only how the Spirit leads, but also whether we truly want to be led.

God’s Design for Spiritual Guidance
God does not leave His people to navigate life alone. Throughout Scripture, we see that the Holy Spirit actively guides, teaches, and directs those who belong to Him.
In John 3:8, Jesus explains:
“The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”
Just like the wind, the Spirit’s work is often unseen but clearly experienced. God’s guidance is not always dramatic or obvious, but it is real and consistent.
The sermon emphasized an important truth: the Holy Spirit leads in many different ways. While every believer’s experience may look slightly different, Scripture reveals several common ways the Spirit directs our lives.

Biblical Principles for Recognizing the Spirit’s Leading
God Speaks Through His Word
The primary way the Holy Spirit leads believers is through Scripture. The Bible reveals God’s character, His will, and His guidance for daily life.
Second Peter reminds us that Scripture was written as people were “carried along by the Holy Spirit.” Because of this, God’s Word is trustworthy and reliable.
When people wonder what God wants them to do, the first place to look is often the Bible. The Spirit will never lead someone to do something that contradicts what God has already revealed in His Word.
For this reason, regular time in Scripture helps train our hearts to recognize God’s voice and understand His direction.

God Gives Wisdom Through Prayer and People
Another way the Spirit leads is through wisdom.
James 1 teaches that if we lack wisdom, we can ask God—and He promises to give it generously. Sometimes this wisdom comes through prayer, reflection, and time with God.
Other times, God provides wisdom through trusted people in our lives. Proverbs reminds us that “in an abundance of counselors there is safety.”
Seeking guidance from mature, godly people can help us make wise decisions about relationships, work, finances, and major life choices. God often uses community to clarify His direction.

God Works Through Circumstances
Sometimes the Spirit guides through open and closed doors.
In the Bible, God frequently worked through circumstances to direct people. Opportunities appearing or disappearing can sometimes reveal the path God is opening.
However, circumstances alone are not the final authority. They must always be evaluated alongside Scripture and wisdom. An opportunity might exist, but that does not necessarily mean it is the right path.
When circumstances align with God’s Word and wise counsel, they can provide helpful confirmation of God’s leading.

Practical Ways the Spirit Guides the Heart
Beyond external guidance, the Holy Spirit also works within us.
Peace—or the Lack of It
Colossians encourages believers to let the peace of Christ rule in their hearts. Sometimes God provides a deep sense of peace about a decision, even in difficult situations.
Other times, a lack of peace can signal that something is not right. This inner restlessness may prompt someone to reconsider their direction or seek further guidance.

The Role of Conscience
God has also given people a conscience, an internal sense that helps us recognize right from wrong.
Our conscience is shaped over time by our experiences, our upbringing, and our understanding of truth. As believers grow in Scripture and faith, their conscience becomes better aligned with God’s heart.
The Spirit often uses this inner awareness to convict us of wrongdoing or to affirm when we are walking in the right direction.

The Inner Witness of the Spirit
Romans 8 describes how the Spirit bears witness with our spirit that we belong to God.
Sometimes this guidance comes as a strong sense of conviction, compassion, or calling. A person may feel drawn toward a certain ministry, decision, or direction in life. These inner promptings often lead believers to pray more deeply and seek God’s wisdom more intentionally.

Occasional Supernatural Guidance
Scripture also records times when God spoke through dreams, visions, prophecy, or other supernatural experiences.
While these moments are not the most common way God leads, they do occur. Throughout the Bible—and even today—God occasionally uses extraordinary means to guide His people.
However, these experiences should always be tested against Scripture and wise counsel to ensure they truly come from God.

Conclusion
The Holy Spirit leads in many ways—through Scripture, wisdom, circumstances, inner conviction, and sometimes even supernatural experiences. But recognizing His guidance begins with a simple desire: a willingness to be led.
God’s Spirit is not distant or silent. He is active, present, and eager to guide those who seek Him.
For those exploring faith, the first step is trusting in Jesus and experiencing the new life He offers. From there, the journey of learning to follow the Spirit begins.
When we slow down, listen carefully, and open our hearts to God’s direction, we begin to see something remarkable: the Spirit has been guiding us all along.
And the more we learn to follow, the more clearly we experience His leading in our lives.
